What is Restorative Justice?

Restorative justice, or peacemaking circles, is/are processes rooted in global indigenous practices. There is not one single model or creator of circles or circle-keeping; the processes were passed down and across. There are many ways to practice and use circles. Circles are used to team-build, plan, and solve conflict within systems, businesses, schools, families, and communities.

Like many organizations and practitioners, Integral Justice facilitates authentic dialogue through the use of a talking piece, centerpiece, and storytelling.

Integral Justice is a vessel for promoting and teaching circles, and the many ways in which communication manifests.

“Imagine a system of law that permits anyone to say anything they like during the course of a dispute, and no authority figure has to determine what is ‘true.’ Think of a system with an end goal of restorative justice, which uses equality and the full participation of disputants in a final decision. If we say of law that "life comes from it," then where there is hurt, there must be healing…The process – which in English we call "peacemaking" – is a system of relationships where there is no need for force, coercion, or control. There are no plaintiffs or defendants; no ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys.’” - Judge Robert Yazzie, Chief Justice Emeritus of the Navajo Nation

“I am continually humbled by human capacities for openness, heart-centered connecting, humility, compassion, understanding, and love.  I find that restorative justice in general and peacemaking circles in particular help us connect with our deepest and best selves and bring these dimensions of ourselves to some of the hardest challenges we face.”   - Kay Pranis, RJ Practitioner, Teacher, Writer, Mentor

Circle, day one.
We read the poem by Muhammad Ali.
ME
WE
In the beginning I was afraid.
I wanted it to be real no one faking.
”Group” in jail always be about faking.
Say what you gotta say, get the certificate to your lawyer.
I didn’t want it to be like that.
But it feels pretty good.
Circle made things feel...umm...what word do I say? Pure!
A place apart from the fakeness I be around all day, feel me.
— "FIRST CIRCLE" by A.R.

Integral Circles Workshops

Circles are truly healing. Our three-day workshops are designed to provide the tools for the development of peacemaking and community-building circles.

We believe that your restorative work will continue with your families and communities - our work with you will support that process. Through one-on-one consultations beyond the workshop, we will assist in planning and building resources for your circle.
